Leather and the italian production
The Italian tanning industry is historically considered the leader in the World, processing about 60% of adult cattle, 10% sheep, 10% goats and 8% of the calves, while reptiles and pigs represent only 0, 4% of total production.
The leather production is primarily for footwear (50%) , followed by leather goods (20%) and leather furnishing (19%). The remaining part is leather for clothing and car interiors. Only 5% is used as leather for bookbinding and accessories.
The Italian tanning industry is the most internationalized sector. Export of italian tanned leather is addressed to approx 120 Countries worldwide.
Despite the strong global competition, the Italian tanning industry still has an undisputed international record with its production reaching 20% of the world production.
